Why Do Tall Babies Need Tall Cribs?

A taller design will keep your big baby safe for longer. The taller your child is, the sooner they may be able to climb out of the crib. As you can imagine, this can be quite a dangerous pastime.

Toddlers are sneaky escape artists and will master these perilous skills when you are least expecting them.

Your baby’s safety is paramount and a taller crib will make it more challenging for your toddler to climb out.

Convertible cribs are ideal for tall babies who can use them longer and feel more comfortable in their sleep area.

Once your child has outgrown their crib, you can easily convert it into a toddler bed for your child to sleep in, without spending money on another large piece of baby gear.

On the other hand, I don’t recommend cribs with attached changing tables for tall babies – keep on reading to find out why!

Choosing The Best Tall Crib – Ranking

Your tall baby needs a place to sleep that will keep them safe as they grow up.

From a beautiful newborn stretching out their tiny toes to a cheeky toddler trying to climb free, you need the best crib that will keep your growing kiddo safe.

It’s fair to say that some baby cribs are more comfortable for tall toddlers than others. If you’re desperate to find the best crib for your tall baby, check out my list below.

1. DaVinci Jayden 4-in-1 Convertible Crib

The DaVinci Jayden 4-in-1 Convertible is a fantastic affordable place for your baby to sleep through to toddlerhood and beyond. The smooth curves and tall slats make the Jayden 4-in-1 stand out from the crowd.

DaVinci Jayden Best Tall Crib
DaVinci Jayden 4in1

This elegantly curved baby bed is made from solid New Zealand pine wood for a solid and super sturdy construction.

The Greenguard Gold certification means this baby crib has been tested for over 10,000 chemicals and VOCs so you can rest assured this is a safe product for your nursery.

It features four adjustable mattress positions, allowing you to find the perfect height for your baby’s crib mattress.

The back of the baby crib features stylish curved headboard with taller slats (they are 49″ high!).

The traditional slatted design looks great once the crib converts into older child bed. Plus, you can always rotate the crib so that the lower rails are next to a wall and taller rails are facing out. This will make your crib a bit taller and give your child a few more inches before they’ll be able to climb over.

DaVinci Baby Crib Jayden
The DaVinci Jayden can be converted into a toddler bed, day bed and full-sized bed, so you won’t need to fork out for a new bed each time your child reaches a new stage

The best thing about this product is the price, it is great quality without a hefty price tag.

One thing to bear in mind is that you will need to purchase a conversion kit separately. Do include the price of the extra parts when considering the overall cost of this bed.

Oh, and one more thing. This tall crib has bigger footprint so make sure you have enough space for it in the nursery.

2. Delta Children Emery

Delta Emery 4-in-1 Convertible is an excellent sleep space suitable for big babies. This product features three height settings so you can keep your baby safe as they grow.

Delta Children Emery inexpensive tall crib

Once they’ve outgrown the convertible crib, you can turn the Delta Emery into a toddler bed, a daybed or a full-size bed for your child.

The classic design will look at home in any nursery, creating a stylish focal point for the room without overpowering the decor.

In addition, the Delta Emery comes in grey, white and dark chocolate, so you can choose the color that best matches the nursery.

The taller rails at the back of the Emery (approx. 44″ high) make this an ideal sleep space for taller babies. Once your baby has reached the climbing stage and grown tall enough to clamber over the rails, you can turn the crib 180 degrees so that the taller rails are at the front.

This will make the cot a couple of inches higher and buy you some time before your child needs to switch to a toddler bed.

Delta Children Emery converts
This convertible crib is perfect for eco-conscious parents. The baby bed is made from sustainable New Zealand pine, a strong wood that will withstand years of use

Many parents worry about toxins and chemicals in their baby’s nursery, but you can rest assured that this item is safe for your baby’s nursery. The Delta Emery has been screened for over 10,000 chemicals and VOCs that pollute indoor air.

My major criticism with the Delta Emery is the lack of caps to cover the bolts. It doesn’t look as aesthetically pleasing as other convertible cribs.

However, if this bothers you, you could always purchase caps separately to achieve a better finish.

The Delta Emery is an affordable option making it a hit with parents. It costs less than some alternatives, and it will last your child for years to come. The price is no reflection on quality, I loved how sturdy the finished Emery feels.

One bugbear is that the toddler guard rail is not included. This item must be purchased separately, so there are some extra costs further down the line if you plan to use this bed long-term.

3. Graco Solano 4-in-1 Convertible Crib With Drawer

This baby crib is a timeless classic with clever storage space. In addition, the adjustable mattress support base offers three height options, making it ideal for tall babies.

Graco Solano Storkcraft
Graco Solano by Storkcraft

This is one of the best convertible cribs for tall babies – it transforms into a toddler bed, daytime bed and full-size bed. This can be actually the only bed you’ll ever purchase for your kiddo!

This baby crib has stationary crib rail design. One side is higher (nearly 42″ high) which means you can rotate the crib 180 degree, with the lower side next to the wall to make the crib “taller” and usable for longer period for your tall toddler.

The Graco Solano has one more clever feature that make it stand out. There is a large drawer underneath the sleep space is a great use of what would otherwise be wasted space.

This nifty drawer is an ideal place to keep spare bedding right where you’ll need them.

PRO TIP: If you’re looking for the best extra tall crib with a drawer, I recommend you this Million Dollar Baby Classic Ashbury – the taller side of this crib is almost 50″ high! It’s also one of the best cribs for tall parents.

By the way, Solano baby crib is also available with an attached changing table, but I recommend you only the classic version without the changer.

There are a few reasons for that: the changer can make it easier for a child to climb out, plus it’s smaller than standalone changing tables so it will be only useable during newborn stage. Besides, a crib with changer is much more bulky and it’s not good option for a small nursery.

4. Dream On Me Ashton

The Dream On Me Ashton Convertible features five adjustable crib mattress height settings so you can find the one that works best for your baby.

Dream On Me Ashton
Dream On Me Ashton

This convertible crib has a traditional look and comes in a variety of colors including espresso, pecan and pearly white.

The Dream On Me Ashton can be converted into a toddler bed, a day bed and a full-size bed so it will grow with your child.

This baby crib is an excellent choice for parents who don’t want to spend a fortune on a place for their baby to sleep. Though it is an affordable option, it doesn’t look cheap. In fact, it looks as good as some of the eye-wateringly expensive alternatives on the market.

The Ashton features a stationary crib rails (meaning the sides don’t drop down for easier access) which provides the utmost in product safety.

The best thing about this product is the price. It is such an affordable option it will suit almost any budget. When you consider that the price is for a crib, toddler bed, day bed and adult bed, it’s an even bigger bargain.

DreamOnMe Ashton All modes
This crib will grow up with your child throughout all stages

This bed may last your child for years to come and yet it costs less than a sleeper bassinet that will last just a few months.

The Dream On Me Ashton is easy to put together and, unlike many alternatives, the instructions are easy to understand.

It’s always a relief when flatpack furniture comes with straightforward instructions that are a breeze to follow.

Like most cribs, the wood used can become dented or scraped with frequent use, however, for the price, it’s not too big a problem. You’re likely to end up with scuffs and the odd dent over time no matter how much you spend.

5. Graco Benton 4-in-1 Convertible Crib

The Graco Benton 4-in-1 Convertible is ideal for taller babies thanks to the 3-position adjustable mattress height.

Graco Benton
Graco Benton

The highest setting makes a convenient and safe sleep space for your baby, so you don’t need to worry about backache when getting your baby in or out of their crib.

You can lower the mattress height to suit your baby as your child grows. The lowest setting is ideal for tall babies and toddlers because the lowered mattress will make it harder (hopefully impossible) for your baby to climb out.

Convertible cribs are ideal for tall babies because you can turn them into a toddler bed once your baby outgrows it.

Graco Benton convertible baby crib for tall toddler
The Graco Benton can convert into a daybed, toddler bed and full-size bed to be their sleep space long into your child’s life

I love the sturdy wood construction, it feels safe and solid which is what you want for your baby. The simple, clean design looks great and won’t dominate your nursery decor.

The height of the taller side of this crib is nearly 42″.

The downside to the Graco Benton 4-in-1 is that the paint chips easily, so if your toddler bites on the rails, paint chips might come loose.

It also means the baby crib can’t withstand being knocked about as well as some of its competitors, so it might not hold up as well during a house move, for example.

6. Million Dollar Baby Noelle

The Million Dollar Baby Noelle 4-in-1 Convertible is a great option for your baby’s nursery. This vintage-inspired piece of nursery furniture is made from wrought iron giving it a stylish aesthetic.

Million Dollar Baby Noelle Crib
Million Dollar Baby Noelle Crib

The wrought-iron curves, elegant spindles and pleasing design combine Parisian Chic style with the romanticism of the French countryside.

This stylish bed will look at home in a Boho-style nursery.

This luxurious product is designed to last your baby through to their teen years. The crib converts easily to a toddler bed, a day bed and a full-sized bed.

Thanks to the wrought iron material, it doesn’t scream baby crib once it’s been converted, unlike some of its competitors.

Plus, it has really tall back rails (nearly 48″ high) so you’ll be able to use it for tall child longer if you rotate it 180°.

This quality item is made from premium steel with a durable powder-coated finish so you don’t need to worry about paint chips or damage.

The Million Dollar Baby Noelle is not cheap, but it certainly deserves its price tag. This hand-finished item looks stylish, well made and is built to last.

Million Dollar Baby Noelle is one of the tallest cribs on the market

This baby crib is an investment piece that you will get years of use out of. This is not a flimsy sleep space, it is sturdy and will stand the test of time.

However, it’s important to factor in the cost of the conversion kits when considering this item.

When it comes time to convert it into a toddler bed, you will need to purchase a conversion kit at extra cost.

Features To Look Out For In Best Crib For Tall Baby

There are no baby cribs designed specifically for tall toddlers, but some cribs are just better suited to tall babies.

For this reason, it’s important to carefully check all features before choosing which one to purchase. There are lots of things to consider when choosing the best baby cribs for tall babies.

Convertible Crib Design

With a taller baby, it is well worth investing in a convertible. A product that converts will buy you some extra time because you can simply switch it into a toddler bed once your child is taller than 35 inches.

Size

Whilst there is no specific solution for big babies, there are items that should be avoided. A mini crib is smaller than a standard-sized one and is designed to fit into smaller spaces.

It would be no good for a tall baby, however, because they would grow out of it even sooner.

The tradeoff for larger size crib, is usually lack of wheels. I haven’t found yet a high-quality portable crib that would fit tall kids comfortably.

Best Tall Crib For tall Baby

Crib Rail Height

If the product has a taller back rail, you could try turning it around so that the taller rail is at the front. This could give the cot a few extra inches of height will mean your baby can’t climb over the side of the cot.

However, do pay attention to the smaller sides of the cot. If these are lower, your toddler may be able to climb over those instead, so it may be a good idea to move the lower side close to a wall.

Adjustable Mattress Height

Without adjustments the crib would be usable only for short period. Check if your favorite crib has at least 3 mattress positions for your fast growing child. The lowest setting is suitable for a child who can stand up. If it’s really low, together with tall rails it should prevent children from climbing out for quick a long period.

Avoid Built-In Changer

If you have a tall bub, avoid cribs with built-in changing table. Attached changer can make it easier for a toddler to climb out of the crib.

Besides, the built-in changers are much smaller than regular stand-alone changing tables therefore your tall kiddo will quickly grow out of it and it will quickly become useless.

How To Stop Baby From Climbing Out Of The Crib?

Some babies are climbers and will try to escape from wherever you put them. There are things you can do to safely discourage your baby from climbing out, including:

Sleep Sacks

Sleep sacks are a safe blanket alternative for your baby. The sack design will prevent your baby from being able to climb because their legs will be cosily tucked away inside the sack.

My favorite is this Sleeping Baby Zipadee Zip which is made from a breathable material so the baby doesn’t sweat. It keeps them safe without blocking the natural movements of their hips. Zipade Zip is available in 5 sizes which fit babies from 3 months to 3 years.

If you’re on tight budget, make sure to check out this adorable TILLYOU Sleep Sack 2-Pack. It’s half the price of Halo! The sack keeps baby warm and safe all night long while still providing them with enough room for kicking.

Anti-Climbing Pajamas

Anti-climbing pajamas are an ingenious product to prevent miniature Houdinis from escaping their baby beds. The pajamas feature a sewn-in strap between the legs to prevent the baby from being able to cock their leg up. Without that freedom of movement, your baby will find it tough to escape from their bed.

If your little one doesn’t like traditional sleepsacks, it may be a good idea to invent in these anti-climbing pajamas from Ergobaby (suitable even up to 3 years). They have convertible feet holes which means they are perfect for sleep time and play time! And their unique design will prevent baby from climbing over the crib rails.

Rotate The Crib 180°

If you want the best crib for tall baby, choose one with longer rails on one side. Once your child gets tall, you can rotate the crib 180 degree so that the lower side (the one you would normally bend it to pick up your child) faces the wall.

Now the taller side will be facing out and this is the side your babe will be trying to climb over. Depending on the crib you choose, rotating the crib will give you a few extra inches.

If you can put your baby crib in a corner so that two sides of the crib are facing the wall, it would be even better! It will make it even harder for your kiddo to climb over.

By the way, if you choose a crib with one taller side and rotate it so that the taller slats are facing out – this will also be the side you’ll be bending in to take your baby in and out. It’s a great solution if you’re looking for a crib for tall parents.

How to prevent baby from climbing out of the crib

Move Other Furniture Items Away From The Baby Crib

If nearby furniture is aiding your child’s escape, moving it further from their bed might help. Remove anything that might be making it easier for your child to escape their baby bed at night.

I recommend you to avoid baby cribs with changers because it may be more temping and easier for the toddler to climb out. Plus he could possible be able to reach and grab some items from the changing table (something that he cut put in his mouth etc.) which could be dangerous.

Invest In A Baby Monitor & Be Ready To Get Them Out When They Ask

This might sound obvious, but your baby climbs out because they are ready to get out of their bed.

Having a baby monitor set up so you can keep an eye on your baby during nap time and get to them as soon as they wake may prevent them from climbing out.

Obviously, this isn’t foolproof but the more responsive you are, the less time your baby will have to perfect their climbing skills. Investing in a baby monitor will give you extra peace of mind.

PRO TIP: Check out my comparison of two best video baby monitors: Nanit vs. Miku monitor.

Don’t Use The Crib For Time-Out

Sending your child to the crib for time out can lead to creating an association in baby’s mind between the crib and negative experience. This way baby will “learn” that crib is like a prison and they will try to escape from it.

Mattress Height

It is recommendable to get a standard crib mattress which is at least 4″ thick, and maximum 6″ thick. If you want to make it harder for your little one to climb out of the crib, you may want to consider getting the thinner option (like this Dream On Me 4″ Foam Crib Mattress). It will make the top rail 2″ higher for your child!

Best Tall Cribs – FAQ

You already know what are the best cribs for tall babies, now it’s time to learn a bit more about height limits and safety standard for tall cribs.

Is There A Height Limit For Cribs?

In accordance with safety regulations, the height limit for standard size crib is 35 inches (max. baby height)1. Once your baby has surpassed this height limit, you should move them into a toddler bed.

Tall babies will reach this milestone sooner, so you will need to think about toddler beds earlier with a tall baby.

How Tall Is Too Tall For Crib?

Once your baby has grown taller than 35 inches, they are too tall for a crib. They are not designed for babies over 35 inches tall, so this environment will no longer be safe for your baby.

There is a risk that your baby could climb out and get hurt. Once your baby is over 35 inches, you should move them into a toddler bed or single bed for safety.

How Do I Know If Baby Is Too Tall For Crib?

Your baby is too tall for their baby crib when he/she surpasses 35 inches in height and they are no longer safe in it.

There are 3 major signs that your baby is too tall for the crib:

  • The crib mattress is set to the lowest setting and the top rail is already at less than three-quarters of the child’s height,
  • Your child is able to pull themselves over the rail,
  • Your child can put their legs on or over the top rail.

Once your child has reached these milestones, it is time to transition your child into a bed. Most children are in a bed by age two.

How Tall Is A Standard Crib?

A standard baby crib interior measures 28 inches (+/- 0.625″) wide by 52.375 inches (+/- 0.625) long2. This can vary slightly depending on the design.

Standard crib frame is approx. 35 inches high, but it highly depends on the specific model, so you’ll need to look carefully at the products available before making your choice.

Tall cribs that I recommend for taller toddlers, are usually approx. 40-42 inches tall. You can also find an extra tall crib like the Million Dollar Baby Classic Ashbury, which is almost 50″ high (on the side with taller slats).

It’s important to look at the height of the lowest mattress height setting as this will determine the height of the cot when your baby is starting to climb. An extra tall crib with many adjustable mattress heights will allow you to get extra use of the crib before your baby can climb out.

How Can I Make My Crib Taller?

No, you cannot safely make your baby crib taller than the manufacturer’s design. Cribs and other baby products are made according to strict safety regulations so they are safe to use.

It is not generally safe to make modifications to baby products because you could potentially be putting your child at risk. A brand new item meets safety regulations but a customized one may not.

If your baby has outgrown their crib, it is time to move your child into a toddler bed. While this may not be something you’re looking forward to, it may be something your child is physically ready for.

You should not keep your child sleeping in a sleep space longer than is safe, once they can climb out it is no longer safe for them to sleep in there.
